ASUS' Zephyrus G series is the ideal balance of portability and utility. The devices in the Zephyrus G series boast excellent battery life, high-quality hardware, beautiful displays, and a low price. The ROG Zephyrus, which was first announced in western markets last year, has a Ryzen9 5900HS CPU and an RTX3050 Ti. The specs of the Zephyrus G15 are as appealing as they sound. It fills the middle-range gaming laptop market with big, powerful boots. Let's find out if this Zephyrus G15 laptop is worth the money. The Zephyrus G15 laptop is tough and built to last. It boasts a solid chassis that resists any movement. The Zephyrus G15 is lightweight at just 2KG. This makes it more portable than other laptops in the same category. There are two options for the device, Moonlight White or Eclipse Gray. I have the latter. The colour scheme is very appealing to me, but the keyboard's stark white backlighting makes it difficult for the keys to be read in bright sunlight. It's easy to see dirt and smudges on this unit's chalky chassis.
As mentioned, the laptop is made from a mixture of magnesium alloy and polycarbonate. This gives it a strong, flexible construction. Indentations on the lid of the unit are used to house the LEDs that powered Zephyrus G14’s Anime Matrix grid. This idea, which I didn't like at all, was dropped. However, the holes can still get clogged up with dirt. The lid uses the Ergolift hinge from the company. This allows for better typing and better airflow, while keeping the temperatures in check. The device has a 3.5mm headphone socket, an HDMI 2.0 port and two USB Type-A ports. There are also two USB Type-C ports. One of these ports can be used for Power Delivery and DisplayPort. This device is AMD-powered and does not support Thunderbolt.
The G15 has an RJ45 LAN port to provide wired internet access and a microSD reader. There is also a Kensington lock slot that provides additional security. The G15 does not have a webcam, just like the Zephyrus G series laptops. If you use zoom calls frequently, you will need to buy a unit. The G15 comes with a 15.6 inch WQHD (2.560 x 1.440) LCD display that refreshes at 160Hz. It is an 8-bit panel with a 100 percent DCI/P3 coverage and 400nits peak brightness. The G15 provided a smooth gaming experience and excellent colour accuracy. The Zephyrus G15 laptop isn't the best for creative use. There are other options that can offer better contrasts and greater dynamic range at a similar price.
The G15 is designed for gamers, and the screen of the laptop offers an excellent viewing experience. The panel was able to convey the rich landscapes in The Witcher 3 and CyberPunk2077'sneon atmosphere well. The unit comes with an anti-glare coating that keeps unwanted reflections and glares at bay.The keyboard is almost identical to last year's and has six rows with no numpad, but well-placed keys. You can travel 1.77mm, which I found to be the best for me. It's a nice addition to the keyboard layout that has a volume control and Armoury Crate buttons. The fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button was also a great addition. It didn't take long for my fingers and thumbs to get used to the keyboard. The trackpad is excellent, with quick response times and clicky tactile feedback. To get the most from your gaming sessions, I recommend that you plug in an external mouse. The Zephyrus G15 comes with AMD's latest-gen Ryzen 5500 series CPU. Ryzen 6000 series machines are coming soon, so let's be clear. Select laptops from ASUS' portfolio already use the new 6000 series CPUs in western markets. This doesn't mean the Ryzen 5900HS in the G15 is a bad choice of hardware. However, it does seem a little late for India. In September last year, I tested the same CPU on the Zephyrus G14 ( Review).
The G15 benchmark numbers show the device's incredible processing power. Cinebench R23 gives the device single-core and multiple-core scores of 1,464 & 12,310, respectively. Geekbench 5, however, mirrors these results. PCMark 10's benchmark simulates how the laptop performs in everyday work situations. The score of 6,323 is clear proof that the G15 is a competent workhorse.
My daily work is not too demanding as I use only Google Chrome, Adobe PDF reader and Microsoft Office. The G15 is a great laptop and performs well.
The laptop comes with 16GB of soldered DDR5 dual channel RAM and 1TB PCIe NVMe storage. CrystalDiskMark was used to test the SSD's efficiency. I got read and write speeds of 3,591MB/s, and 2,990MB/s, respectively.
NVIDIA's RTX 3050T Ti, which runs the device's GPU capabilities, has almost replaced the GTX 1660 found in many laptops. To get better frame rates, the device can run at QHD resolution. However, I restricted it to 1080p for most games.
While using the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark I was able to get a speed of 74fps while keeping graphics at the High preset. Cold War ran at 65fps using ray-tracing enabled at high graphic settings. However, the laptop did get quite hot. CyberPunk2077 ran at 50fps with no ray-tracing on High settings. CS: GO, Valorant run at the highest settings to produce 120 and 140 fps, respectively.
Although I didn't notice any frame drops, after around 30 minutes the WASD keys began to feel warm under my fingers. The Turbo mode can also cause fans to spin loudly. The Silent profile is not recommended to reduce fan noise. This can cause a decrease in performance. The speakers are loud, but not bad. You can still get the best audio experience with a pair wired or wireless headphones.
The G15's battery backup is what sets it apart among other gaming laptops. Like the other devices in the company's line, the G15's 90Whr battery provides excellent backup and can last up to eight hours on a single charge. The battery will drop faster if the device is subjected to GPU or CPU-intensive tasks.
I didn't have any problems with the charger, and it lasted me for a whole day. The G15 is the best gaming laptop in terms of battery life. The unit's 180W charger can recharge the G15 in just two hours. This is incredible.
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 is available at a price of Rs 1,29,000. It's a powerful device that can be used as both a gaming and work companion. The device has an impressive battery life and is sturdy with a great display. The G15's 5900HS may feel outdated with the new Ryzen series laptops. Buyers who want to get the most value from their purchase will be better served by the ASUS TUF 17 which is a cheaper option but has a Ryzen 6800H processor and RTX 3060 graphics. The Zephyrus G15 is a small laptop that runs excellently and can be used for gaming.
