Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition review

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition is not compatible with 5G or the processing power that a smartphone with a price of less than Rs 18,000 yet it's an appealing alternative. Apart from its distinctive design The phone has decent performance, all-day batteries, responsive display and cameras that perform good, at least in daylight.

The bottom line

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition is the latest model to get on the color-changing design trend. But, unlike the other models that have come before it, the Tecno phone's design that changes colour is not subtle at all. The handset's design is influenced by the work that were created by Pier Mondrian, one of the most well-known artists of the 20th century. The back of the handset is divided into various rectangles that show different shades of purple and blue when exposed to ultraviolet or sunlight (UV) light in this case. This is due in part to phone's Polychromatic Photoisomer technology, which allows the monochrome cover of the phone to show a range of colours when illuminated. This is not all however, since the long lines that divide one rectangle from the next (and even that camera's module) enhance the overall aesthetics to the handset.

Apart from that the phone also provides an excellent in-hand feel which is due in part to the matt finish on the back of the phone, as well as the phone's smooth edges. The phone doesn't attract fingerprints or smudges this is a great thing. But I did find this Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition somewhat weighty. In reality despite its plastic design it does tip the scales at 204 grams not much, but it could provide a good workout for your wrist when you're watching TV or movies on the phone. The camera's circular modules extend out from the frame and cause the phone sway when laid on an even surface. In terms of I/O device, it's the Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition comes with a USB Type-C port, as well as an 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a speaker grille on the bottom of the. A fingerprint reader is situated on the right side of the phone, and is located inside the button for power.

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition sports a 6.8-inch display, with FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The display boasts TUV Rheinland low blue light certification as well. Be that as it may, the panel is of the LCD variety and correspondingly, lacks the high contrast ratio and deep blacks reciprocated by competing AMOLED panels. But, otherwise, the display is quite bright and offers pleasant viewing angles as well. I had no issues using the phone under direct sunlight. I also enjoyed watching movies and TV shows on the handset as it is Widevine L1 certified and supports content in 1080p resolution from Netflix and other streaming platforms. Furthermore, the display sports slim bezels, which paves the way for an immersive viewing experience, and a centered punch-hole for the selfie camera that is not very distracting.

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian is powered by the Helio G96 SoC from MediaTek It is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable user storage. This is able to provide 5GB of virtual RAM in order to save some temporary files in case you are running out of RAM physical. In terms of performance of the handset, this Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition did not stumble when playing with a variety of Chrome tabs, as well as my preferred email application, Slack, Netflix, and WhatsApp. In addition the phone is no slow player for gaming and is able to play games like Asphalt 9 and PUBG New State with low frame rates and settings for graphics without difficulty. The phone scored impressive scores in benchmark tests too. In particular, it came back with 1,752 points in the Geekbench multi-core test. On AnTuTu the phone scored 3,49,999 points. In all fairness the G96 SoC seems outdated now, and it has been replaced with G99. G99 SoC. It is fair to say that both chipsets have comparable performance, but it is the Helio G99 SoC has an advantage against its predecessor, the Helio G96 SoC in benchmark tests.

As for optics, the Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition sports triple rear cameras comprising a 64MP RGBW+(G+P) primary sensor, which uses a white sensor instead of green to capture more light. The primary sensor is accompanied by a 50MP portrait/telephoto lens with 30x zoom (2x optical) and a 2MP sensor. Up front, the handset sports a 32MP snapper for selfies and video calling. The sensors offered detailed shots, with decent highlights, in sunny as well as overcast conditions. That said, the colours looked over-saturated and made a gloomy shot extra bright. The 64MP primary sensor comes with OIS (optical image stabilisation), which helps you get a stable shot while shooting a video in up to 2k resolution and uses pixel-binning technology for 16MP stills by default. However, there is an option to shoot 64MP images, and it is worth trying out. The sensor is also quick to focus, thanks to the accompanying laser autofocus module, and offers eye detection for subject tracking as well.

Moving to the next option to the 50MP portrait Telephoto lens that has a 2x optical zoom is great in perfect lighting conditions. Although the lens is able to zoom up to 30x in digital mode, I wouldn't suggest going over 5x because the images appear grainy and less lively. The portrait photos have great blurring and edge detection. The portrait mode is compatible with videos too. The 32MP selfie camera has beautiful skin tones and facial details as the sun goes shining. The edge detection in the portrait mode could need some adjustments. In low lighting the front and also the rear camera softens the image to reduce noise through SuperNight mode. This mode will automatically activate when it is needed but is a separate option into the camera layout as well. Apart from that the cameras swung on subjects quickly, and the images took a short amount for processing. The phone also has an Film mode, which comes with pre-set themes for short videos.

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition comes with a battery of 5,000mAh that is long-lasting and will allow you to last at least a full day on one charge. The phone earned an impressive 15-hour and 28 minute for the PC mark battery test. I was always able to get an entire day of battery life with about 15-20 percent remaining juice in the tank on normal smartphone use. The phone is equipped with a quick 33W charging solutionthat will recharge the phone from 0 to 100 percent in just one hour and an hour and a half.

Software-wise, the Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition runs HiOS V8.6 atop Android 12 out of the box. The UI has all the features, including dark mode and call recording, but the experience is nowhere close to stock Android. In fact, the skin comes with a ton of bloatware and sends unnecessary notifications which clutter the user’s notification tray too. On the bright side, the Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition’s side-mounted fingerprint scanner is among the fastest sensors I have tested to date. The phone’s 4G LTE and dual-band Wi-Fi also works just fine too, while the single bottom-firing speaker offers decent sound quality.

Final decision

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition comes in a single configuration 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage that can be purchased in India at Rs 17,999. It's not a bad price however but it doesn't outdo its competitors like its Redmi Note 11 Pro. The latter has the same processor as the Tecno smartphone , but comes with the same 120Hz refresh rate, AMOLED screen and a primary camera with 108MP It also has an IP53 rating and the 67W fast charging option. This Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition is also in competition with its rival, the Moto G62 5G ( review) that costs around just Rs 17,999 for the variant with 8GB RAM and comes with 120Hz IPS LCD screens as well as a similar version to Android as well as an Snapdragon 695 SoC in the mix as well.

However, the Tecno Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition is a stunning design and a colour-changing scheme that is bound to draw the attention of others. The Tecno smartphone also has an telephoto lens, which is not often seen within the budget and comes with a reliable primary sensor, stunning display, and an incredibly fast fingerprint scanner. When all is said and done even though it's not the most efficient in its price range the latest Tecno smartphone is worth to be given a second glance.
