Samsung Galaxy Watch5 review

Samsung's Galaxy Watch series can be thought of as a leading contender to Apple's Apple Watch in the premium smartwatch category. Samsung's Galaxy Watch series is a dominant force in the premium smartwatch market. South Korean giant's market share in the wearable market wasn't substantial until this year, however, in 2022, it's reported to have registered significant growth year-on-year. While low-cost brands such as Noise, Fire Bolt, and Boat remain popular in the overall market for smartwatches in India, Samsung is becoming more prominent on the premium side. It's evident the Galaxy Watch5 series, where Samsung has revealed two variants known as Watch5 Pro (review) and Watch5 Pro ( review) as well as the Watch5. The former is a premium model that retails for just 45,000 rupees, and the other can be seen as being a little less expensive. Of course Samsung's Galaxy Watch5 is by no way cheap it comes with a Bluetooth-only 40mm model costing 27999 rupees. I own the 44mm LTE model , which has an additional price increase to Rs 35,999, which makes it a pretty high-end wearable. Galaxy Watch5 is compatible with all phones. Galaxy Watch5 can pair with any Android phone, so that it runs on Android 8 or above. I've been using the Watch5 in the last two weeks together with the OnePlus 10 Pro ( review) and here's my thoughts on it.

Design

If you've been a fan of previous models, such as the Galaxy Watch4, then the Watch5 will be a bit familiar. On the surface, Samsung has made very little, if any modifications to its design and that's an excellent thing. Its circular screen is enclosed in an aluminum body that is durable, with the two buttons remain on the same side. I own the Sapphire color option and an additional strap included in the box. Both are elegant. The Watch5 is the perfect size for me and at only 33.5g is light enough to feel heavy.

Display

Samsung is among the most prominent display manufacturers in the world and it is logical that its products make the best usage of it. The Super AMOLED display on Watch5 Watch5 is 1.4-inches and comes with an x-resolution of 450x450. With a maximum brightness of 1,000nits The Galaxy Watch5 is easily legible even in the most intense lighting conditions. I also loved how clear and vivid the colors were for the various watch faces along with the UI element. As with its Pro model the display of the Watch5 is protected by a specific type of sapphire glass that is more durable than normal glass. Naturally, the display is always on and it retains its color profile that is reminiscent of the face of the watch although the outcomes are somewhat less vibrant.

Software and Utility

Samsung has teamed up with Google for the software aspect of the Galaxy Watch5. This combination of WearOS together with Samsung's UI elements layered on top of it is an impressive move that offers consumers a unique utility that is both. You can access the Google Play Store on the watch which allows you to download numerous applications. For example, Google Maps works quite well, offering quick directions, and also providing subtle haptic feedback as turning is near. Beyond that there are other apps available on the device like Spotify, Microsoft Outlook, and many more. The majority of the time the interface is fluid and does a fantastic job changing between screen. The most common gestures are tapping up to open the downloaded apps, and swiping left in order to access secondary screens, swiping to the right to receive notifications, and swiping down to quickly set-up. These two buttons are able to take you back to homescreen or the previous screen. They can be customisable through the Galaxy Wearable application to provide different functions. I also love how you can use the Raise to wake function works flawlessly every time I rotate my wrist. The built-in speakers and microphone allow you to make calls right from your smartwatch. It's even better when your smartphone is connected with wireless earphones, and a phone call from the Watch5 directly transfer the call to your headphones. The speaker built into the watch isn't particularly loud, and you must place it in your ear in order to hear things clearly. However, the microphone functions exceptionally well in noisy setting. Samsung's Galaxy Wearable app is highly intuitive and offers appropriate customisation options for users. There's a variety of watches faces to pick from, as well as Samsung's Galaxy Watch5 itself can store various faces. Additionally, apps have notifications hidden in the interface, as well as buttons mapping, gesture control and many other. Although Samsung's Bixby is the preferred option to use for AI you can alter the default into Google Assistant thanks to the WearOS integration. There are other changes that can be made to fitness and health tracking , including the measurement of SpO2 levels when you sleep and detecting activity automatically heart rate notifications and much more.

The Galaxy Watch5 offers excellent fitness tracking capabilities as well as the ability to keep track of your body's vitals. The Samsung Health app is required to examine the many variables by which Samsung tracks your workouts and overall health. It has a constantly updated step counter which is displayed on the notification panel of your smartphone but it can be disabled. There are 100 exercise routines you can pick from on the Watch and you can also download Google Fit from the Play Store to do more exercises. But, the Watch 5's automated health tracking can only be used with Samsung's workout routines that are already in use. I was very pleased with the information collected by Watch5 throughout my evening workouts. The built-in GPS constantly updated track's locations as well as the distance covered in each run and the associated heart rate. Within the Health app, you can find additional, more specific metrics about heart zone zones, levels of VO2 losses in sweat and many more. I compared the data against those of the Apple Watch SE and found they were constant and precise. Its IP68 waterproof rating permits users to take the Watch 5 for a swim and dives as high as 5ATM. Sleep tracking functions on the Watch5 that are, in turn, very precise. It is possible to get an in-depth analysis of your sleeping patterns, including blood oxygen levels and snoring information when your phone is near your body. The watch also monitors your heart rate in intervals of five minutes and lets you know when it's higher than normal in different circumstances. I was somewhat irritated by the frequency with which the workout alarm is activated even when I'm walking to the store. The smartwatch is also impressive in that it incorporates a bioelectrical analysis sensor to monitor BMI, body fat, and other statistics. A short run of 40 minutes can result in a significant amount of sweat being deposited on the screen of the Watch5 and this can impact the responsiveness of the touchscreen. I was unable to swipe across the other screens or access other essential information, which was an inconvenience. Even to stop the exercise, I had to press the buttons.

Battery life

With the display always on the Watch5 will last about two days on full charge. But, with the display enabled, I could barely make it through the one-and-a-half day. The battery's capacity is slightly larger than it was last time however, there seems to be any significant benefits in the battery's life. The daily workout tracker further eats the battery and I believe that Samsung isn't keeping up with competitors such as Fitbit. The tracking of blood oxygen levels fluctuates at best when asleep. Samsung's Health app displays my SpO2 dropping from 78 to the level of 78 percent one night, while the next night, I didn't notice it dropping below the 92 percent mark. All of this means that the watch's reading could change depending upon your position while sleeping and is not recommended to address medical issues.

Final decision

With a few minor drawbacks, Samsung has created a healthy and high-end smartwatch experience through Samsung's Galaxy Watch5. For those who are health-conscious and fit There isn't much comparable products that provide. If you don't have an iPhone or an Apple Watch, it is the Galaxy Watch5 is the way to take. It is possible to shell for more money for the Watch5 Pro, but most of the features offered by the regular Watch5. Additionally, those who own the Samsung smartphone will enjoy the most polished experience, which virtually eliminates any rivals in the premium smartwatch market.
