ASUS' first ROG Zephyrus was introduced almost two years ago. It is a powerful gaming notebook that measures in at a compact size of 14 inches. This laptop featured a unique design, and was able to deliver excellent performance due to AMD's Ryzen 4000-series processors paired with Nvidia GPUs. The company seems to have made the notebook even more amazing by moving forward to 2022. The latest Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop is truly exceptional. I have spent some time with it and am now tempted to purchase one for myself. There are some things that must be addressed, particularly when it comes down to pricing. Continue reading to find out if the ROG Zenphyrus G14 is right for you.ASUS has not changed the form factor of its new G14 laptop, but it has made several design improvements to address customer and reviewer concerns. The new G14 laptop comes with a consistent colour scheme. The previous model had a touch of silver around its keyboard deck.Other improvements include a built in 720p webcam that supports Windows Hello face recognition, RGB backlighting on the keyboard, repositioned top-firing stereo speakers, a larger trackpad, and a 16:10 ratio display. You'll get more customizable LEDs with the AniMe matrix variant of the laptop's lid. It also has more perforations. Although my review unit didn't include AniMe matrix LEDs, it looks great and makes the laptop stand out even more.
The device is just under 20mm in width and weighs approximately 1.65kgs. The G14 is a well-designed product that looks great. The laptop is built well and has good friction. The keyboard and lid have a little bit of flex, but this was not a major problem. This laptop continues to feature the company's ergolift hinge design. The bottom chassis is elevated to improve airflow and provide a better typing angle. The lid can be flipped up to 180 degrees, giving users greater flexibility in adjusting the viewing angle. The I/O is the same as before. However, the locations of the ports are still the same. The left side has a barrel-shaped charging port and an HDMI 2.0b port. There is also a USB Type-C port with DisplayPort and power delivery support, and a combo jack for headphones and microphones. The laptop also comes with two USB Type-A ports and one USB Type-C Type-C port, as well as DisplayPort and a microSD slot. The laptop comes with two stereo speakers that are top-firing, and two bottom-firing speakers. They offer an excellent audio experience. We'll get to that in a moment. To reveal the interior, you can remove the bottom cover by unscrewing ten screws. You can upgrade the M.2 SSD, Wi Fi module, and half of the dual-channel memory, just like last year. If you choose the 16GB RAM model, 8GB will be soldered to the board while the other half of the removable (SODIMM), module will be attached.
The Zephyrus G14's screen is in a word excellent. It is also a worthy upgrade to the previous generation. The screen is 14 inches in size and has a resolution of 2560x1600-pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:10. The panel is sharp and gives you more space to explore. The only problem is that the plastic bezels surrounding the display detract from the unit’s premium build. The bezels are thin, which is a plus. The panel is also quite good. It offers a 120Hz refresh rate and 100% coverage of DCI–P3 gamut. 98% coverage of AdobeRGB and 500 nits brightness. The screen's colour accuracy ensures that it is well balanced for gaming and content creation. It is also perfect for watching movies and TV shows. The viewing angles are excellent with very little colour shift and the matte finish made it easy to avoid reflections. It's obvious that ASUS has done a great job with the G14's display. The laptop also offers the best screen I have ever tested on any gaming notebook for 2022.The G14 keyboard has a good spacing between keys, as well as key travel and feedback. The unit is easy to use and takes only a few days to master. ASUS offers four media keys, which are assigned for volume up, volume lower, microphone mute/unmute, and Armoury Crate. However, these keys can be changed. A single-zone RGB backlighting is available on the keyboard that can be used to illuminate key legends. It's also useful for nighttime use. Although the keyboard does not have a Print-screen button and no Fn (Functions) lock option, these are minor issues.
The trackpad was also upgraded, proving that the Zephyrus range can be used for more than just gaming. The unit has a huge surface area, feels silky smooth, and is extremely responsive thanks to the premium glass finish. I was able to easily navigate web pages and select the right options while editing Photoshop images. Although the large size raised concerns about palm rejection, particularly while gaming, I was able to navigate through web pages quickly and make precise selections in Photoshop.
The biggest change aside from the new design is the updated hardware. The new G14 is powered by the Zen 3+ microarchitecture-based AMD Ryzen 6000-series CPUs, specifically the Ryzen 9 6900HS which is an octa-core processor with 16 threads. It has a base frequency at 3.3GHz, which can be turbo-boosed to 4.9GHz. It supports features such as USB 4 (40Gbps), PCI-e Gen 4 DDR5 memory and WiFi 6E. The Radeon 680M integrated GPU is also available. It's based on RDNA2 architecture and offers 12 CUs (compute unit) at 2.4GHz.
ASUS has paired AMD's Ryzen CPU with AMD’s own discrete GPU options, the Radeon RX6800S and RX6700S. The RX 6800S seems to be a better candidate as it ships with a 1440p resolution screen. The RX 6700S GPU isn't bad. The rest of the specs include a 32GB DDR5-4800 memory (upgradable up to 40GB) and a 1TB PCIe.4.0 NVMe.2 SSD. The AMD India unit I received was marked GA402RJ. It features the Ryzen9 6900HS CPU and Radeon RX6700S GPU, 16GB DDR5 memory, and a 1TB M.2 SATA SSD.
ASUS's excellent hardware choices are a clear sign of their commitment to exceptional performance. The Ryzen 9 6900HS processor is very powerful and has a TDP 35W. This laptop comes with a Radeon RX6700S, which can boost up to 100W. It also has 8GB of GDDR6 RAM, 28 compute units, and a clock speed at 1890MHz. The laptop was powerful enough to handle my daily driving tasks. The laptop is capable of handling creative tasks such as photo and video editing with ease.
The gaming performance is not the best, but the Zephyrus G14 is the best in its class. The Alienware x14 is the only 14-inch gaming notebook that is available in India. It is more expensive and is not as easily available through e-Commerce portals / offline stores.
Rise of the Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Horizon Zero Dawn were able to run at an average 75ps and 55fps, respectively, when set at 1600p resolution. A jump in frame rates of around 20-25% was possible by dropping the resolution to 1200p. Given the size of the RX 6700S, which is only 14 inches in diameter, I didn't mind playing at a lower resolution. The performance of the RX6700S is comparable to that of the Nvidia RTX 3060, with the exception of ray tracing. AMD's FidelityFX super resolution is not yet supported by all games. DLSS will also prevent you from fully enjoying the ray tracing performance.
The ASUS G14 gaming laptop comes standard with Armoury Crate software. This allows you to fine tune the laptop to your specifications. You can toggle between performance modes and adjust the lighting effects. There are many other settings you can play with. You can also enable or disable MUX, which disables the integrated GPU for maximum performance.
Since I don't deal with resource-hungry programs, I did some benchmarks to stress-test the hardware. The benchmark numbers below can be viewed. They were obtained by activating the Turbo performance mode within the Armoury Crate App.
The keyboard deck is quite comfortable even under stress. The exhaust vents that spew hot air out from under the display and along the sides of the laptop are to be watched as this heats up the entire area, including the vents. Despite temperatures reaching 98 degrees, there was no thermal throttling. ASUS's internal cooling system, which includes a vapour chamber as well as a number of copper heat pipes, has performed admirably. It was pleasing to note that the idle temperatures of the GPU and CPU remained at around 42-45 degrees.
The laptop is compatible with PCIe Gen 4 SSDs. However, it does not come with one. Peak read and write speeds are lower. According to what I could find, the Zephyrus G14's 1TB SSD is capable of storing 3,500Mbps sequential read speeds as well as 3,000Mbps sequential writing speeds. These are remarkable numbers, but it's good to know you can upgrade to a faster SSD with speeds up to 7,000Mbps read speed and 5,000Mbps writing speed.I wanted to mention how great the speakers sound. Two top firing and two bottom firing speakers are included in the notebook. They combine to produce clear audio with a little bit of bass. Although I didn't have a MacBook to compare it to, I found it to be very similar to the quad-speakers in my iPad Pro M1.The Zephyrus G14 is an example of AMD's efficiency in terms of battery life. If you are using the laptop for light tasks, you can expect a battery life of eight to ten hours.
My testing revealed that I was able to use the laptop for seven and a quarter hours. This included using multiple Chrome tabs, editing photos in Photoshop, and watching videos on YouTube. To get more juice, you can lower the brightness or change the performance mode to silent from the ASUS Armoury software. This makes it one of the most efficient gaming laptops in its class. The battery should last for about one to two hours if you plan on gaming without having to plug it in. The laptop supports USB PD charging, which is the same as the older-generation models. You can charge your battery with a compatible third-party USB-C charger. This would result in slow charging and reduced performance
The 2022 ROG ZEPHERUS G14 is a small gaming notebook with all the necessary features. The design changes have made the laptop more in line with the Zephyrus G15's aesthetics. It looks great and is durable. It's worth noting that ASUS made efforts to fix and improve the problems of previous generations, such as updating the speakers and adding a webcam.Although the switch from Nvidia graphics to AMD graphics wasn't necessary, overall performance is excellent. While you do lose a little bit in ray tracing performance as Nvidia still holds the edge, I believe AMD has the potential to improve this with future software updates. The display is bright, fast and vibrant. It renders vivid colours that make it great for gaming or viewing high-quality content. The battery life is quite impressive for an everyday laptop.ASUS sells the Zephyrus G14 starting at Rs 1,46,990. The laptop is equipped with the Ryzen 7 6800HS as well as the Radeon RX6700S. The laptop is expensive, and the Radeon RX 6800S version will cost you more. The upgraded GPU won't give you a significant increase in gaming performance and will cost you more. The Zephyrus G14 is a solid choice for gamers who want a small, powerful, and attractive machine.
